Vanilla Milkshakes with Hot Fudge Sauce

As a part of Vegan MoFo I decided to dedicate my Wednesday posts to Ladies' Night! You'll find ideas to host a fun movie party complete with drinks and snacks for the perfect girls night in.

I grew up watching and loving movies like Grease and Bye Bye Birdie. I know most people have seen these or at least been in a production of them in high school! Apparently the 1950's era just makes a great setting for breaking out into song. Another movie I discovered in recent years is Cry Baby, which stars a really young Johnny Depp. It's a spoof on the teen idol, good girl/bad boy 50's musicals and it's totally hilarious. So, if you're like me and love a good retro sing-a-long movie, I'm sure you'll also love these diner inspired milkshakes with hot fudge sauce!

Vanilla Milkshakes with Hot Fudge Sauce
makes 2-3 milkshakes, adapted from my little celebration

3 C vanilla dairy-free ice cream
1 C almond milk

1 C full fat coconut milk
1/2 C cocoa powder
5 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt

optional: vegan chocolate sprinkles

Add the ice cream and almond milk to a blender, and mix until smooth. Add in more milk if it's too thick.

Combine the coconut milk and cocoa powder in a sauce pan and whisk over medium heat. Stir in the sugar, vanilla and salt and heat through. Transfer to a heat safe container to store.

To add the sprinkles around the glass like I did, dip the rim into some vegetable oil and then into a dish of the sprinkles.

Swirl your hot fudge around the inside of the glass, then pour in your milkshake. Feel free to add more fudge or sprinkles on top!

I always have a hard time passing up ice cream or milkshakes. These were a delicious sweet treat and would be so perfect for your next ladies night or any fun occasion. I'm already looking forward to trying other flavors...like my all time favorite- mint chocolate chip! What flavor would you make?

Pomegranate Vanilla Limeade

As a part of Vegan MoFo I decided to dedicate my Wednesday posts to Ladies' Night! You'll find ideas to host a fun movie party complete with drinks and snacks for the perfect girls night in.

My friends and I really enjoy hosting Ladies' Nights. We get together, eat snacks, watch our favorite movies and sometimes even do some crafts or paint our nails. It's an excuse to hang out, but also to be silly and laugh together. I always use these evenings as a reason to make new treats, so I thought it would be great as one of my themes for Vegan Mofo.

First up is a recipe inspired by one of my favorite movies of all time Thoroughly Modern Millie!

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical comedy starring Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore. It was made in 1967, but is set in New York in the roaring 1920's. This movie is adorable, lighthearted and so much fun. I've been watching it since I was young, and I've made sure to introduce it to all my friends. I have a special place in my heart for "The Tapioca" which is a dance number that takes place when the two main characters meet for the first time. It's one of my favorite musical numbers from any movie ever!

In this clip you can see our villain trying to pass out some innocent looking punch, which she has actually poisoned. (See this movie has everything- singing, dancing, drama, and poison!)
In honor of the fancy punch at the friendship dance, I decided that I would make my own fancy drink to serve that would go perfectly when watching this movie.

Pomegranate Vanilla Limeade
makes about 4 cups, adapted from the kitchy kitchen

1 C lime juice (about 10 limes fresh squeezed)
2 C hot water
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 C cold water
1/4 C agave
1/3 C pomegranate juice (optional)

Juice the limes into a blender, and then put the used lime halves into a large bowl. Cover with 2 cupes of hot water and stir in the vanilla extract. Let this sit for 10 minutes to pull more of the lime flavor out., then strain liquid into the blender. Add the cold water, agave, and pomegranate juice is desired. Blend everything together and then chill until serving.

As you can see from my photos, I made both the pomegranate version and also just a vanilla limeade version. Both were great and refreshing. Do you like to make fancy drinks to serve at parties?

Are you a musical fan? My husband hates them with a firey passion, so I always vote to watch musical movies at ladies' nights so I can get my fix!

Tropical Green Smoothie

These smoothies are my usual go to breakfast. I used to make these with just juice and a ton of fruit, but then I realized it was a lot of sugar and not much else. After tweaking a couple of things, I think I've made it healthier but it still tastes great!

Tropical Green Smoothie
serves 1

1/2 C fresh spinach leaves, packed
1/2 C orange juice
1/2 C almond milk
1 T ground flax
1 T almond butter
1/2 C frozen fruit (pineapple, mango, papaya, peaches)
1 banana

Add all of the ingredients into your blender, blend and serve!

I know there are a lot of green drink recipes out there, and most of them agree when starting to add greens that spinach is the place to start. It has such a mild taste that you would barely notice it was there if it wasn't for the color of the smoothie!

I also sometimes add in a little spoonful of vegan protein powder if it's after a workout.

What are your favorite smoothie add ins?
