Vegan in Vegas

In between all the fun of moving and unpacking, I got the chance to go to Las Vegas for a couple days since my husband was going for work. I had never been there before and wasn't sure how much I'd like it. I'm not usually a fan of big crowds and have no interest in gambling, but I ended up really having a great time!
veganfling_vegas_roundup
The first stop was at a Whole Foods for some snacks where I was greeted by the "Welcome for our fabulous Las Vegans" sign!

I found a tasty veggie wrap and a smoothie at Tropical Smoothie Cafe, which is located on the strip across from the Cosmopolitan where we were staying. It's a great inexpensive option if you're looking for a bite.

This delish vegan soft serve is from Pop Up Pizza which is located in downtown Las Vegas, inside the Plaza Hotel.

Of course we had to stop by the Bellagio to see the fountain show which was pretty amazing!

veganfling_vegas_pizza
We paid a visit to Slice of Vegas Pizza, which is located in the Shops at Mandalay Place on the strip. They have a whole vegan menu, which I forgot to take a photo of, but there are tons of choices. Pictured above is a pesto garlic bread, roasted cauliflower, and a veggie sandwich - everything was great!

veganfling_vegas_wynn
Our evening at the Wynn hotel seeing the impressive show "Le Reve" and having dinner at Red 8 was extra amazing. Vegan Dim Sum?! I was so excited, and it did not disappoint! The Wynn and Encore hotels both have vegan options at all the restaurants, so make sure you pay a visit to some of the great places there.

veganfling_vegas_thai
While in Downtown Las Vegas we found Le Thai, which was a delicious dinner stop! I tried the tofu and veggie stir fry, plus a cucumber salad with peanut sauce - yum! This was totally our kinda place, wish it was closer to home.

veganfling_vegas_cosmo
Lastly I wanted to talk about the Cosmopolitan hotel, where we stayed. Check out the beautiful pool above! I figured out that going to the pool right at 8am when it opened was perfect. No crowds, but it was already like 90 degrees out so perfect for a swim. I also tried out the vegan burger at Holstein's which is located inside the Cosmopolitan on the 2nd floor. Thanks to fried dandelions, who mentioned it in her vegas post!

It was a quick trip but also a nice break. I was able to get work done during the day but go out to eat fun food and see shows and museums at night! I could get used to that. :)

Friday Flashback: Southern California

We spent memorial day weekend in California for a wedding in Malibu, and to hang out and soak up some sun! Here are some of the food highlights of the trip.

nativefoods_veganfling
Native Foods Cafe in Santa Monica -
My first time trying this vegan chain restaurant - it was super delicious! Happy to learn there is a location in Boulder too.

mandarinlotus_veganfling

Mandarin Lotus near Malibu (Agoura Hills) -
This is a tiny Chinese food place located in a strip mall that you might usually just pass by... but if you are anywhere nearby you need to make a stop here for amazing food! The whole back of the menu was vegetarian and vegan, and the owners were so nice and helpful. The orange tofu, above, was delicious and they also made me some vegan hot and sour soup.

veggiegrill_veganfling

Veggie Grill in Long Beach -
Another vegan chain that I tried for the first time. I am jealous - wish we had some more places like this in Colorado! Of course I had to try the chocolate pudding. :)

ambrosia_veganfling
Cafe Ambrosia in Long Beach -
One of our favorite meals on the trip, this cute restaurant in Long Beach is a must stop. A whole page of vegan options, gigantic portions, and delicious greek food - how can you go wrong? Our waitress was super nice too and brought me extra sauces to try out once she found out I was vegan.

anand_veganfling
Anandamide - Long Beach
We just stumbled on this place while checking out "Retro Row" on 4th street and I had to stop in for some raw vegan chocolates.

steamed_veganfling
Steamed Organic Vegetarian Cuisine - Long Beach
We had a great afternoon riding bikes around to vintage shops and stopping in for tasty lunch at Steamed.

sura_veganfling

Sura Korean BBQ - Long Beach
If you've tried any of my recipes before you can probably guess I am not a fan of spicy foods. This was my first time trying Korean BBQ and although I loved that they announce their vegan-friendliness on their website and in their window, I have to say that I don't think Korean BBQ is for me. These tofu tacos look pretty though, don't they? I think they were tasty too, but I can't say for sure because my face was kind of on fire. But if that is your thing - check it out!

source_veganfling
The Source Cafe - Hermosa Beach
Stopped in this cute cafe for a quick breakfast and grabbed some fresh iced tea and lemonade too. Their bagel with red pepper spread was really good!

I know there are TONS of places I missed out on in this area, and I will have to visit the next time I go back. Anyone have any favorites in Southern California?

Friday Flashback: Florida

florida2_veganfling

We spent part of the holidays in Florida with my Grandma. Above is part of the New Year's Eve spread of food that I made (a quinoa and vegetable salad, and cucumber and vegan cream cheese tea sandwiches), and the Koi pond in my Grandma's backyard.

florida1_veganfling

I was also able to try out a local vegan restaurant: The Green Wave in Plantation, FL. It's all raw and organic, and we tried a salad, a veggie sandwich, and a really delicious chocolate milkshake! A great option if you're in the area.

Have a great weekend!

Vegan in Paris

paris8_veganfling

I recently returned home from a trip to Paris. My husband and I decided to go for a fun sight-seeing vacation as well as to celebrate our first anniversary. We fit a ton of museums, historical sights, wandering and shopping into one week and we had a great time. I was nervous about finding things to eat in a city that in famous for loving it's meat and cheese, but with some planning ahead of time things were actually easier than I thought. Check out my restaurant stops below as well as some general tips if you are planning a trip to Paris!

paris2_veganfling
The one food related activity we booked ahead of time was a market tour and cooking class with La Cucina di Terresa. It offers vegetarian cooking classes with Terresa in her quaint Paris apartment. We met her at the Sunday organic market and picked out ingredients for our lunch, and some extra things like homemade dairy-free chocolates. Terresa was a great tour guide and pointed out some sights to us as we walked back to her home. It was great to have a local to show us around and give insider tips on shopping. We created some tasty dishes in her kitchen: a farinata (chickpea flatbread), a Swiss chard pasta with a lemon walnut sauce, and a traditional French dessert made from almond milk with pomegranate called Blancmanger. Terresa was happy to make our menu fully vegan for me. We tried some local natural wines too. I was feeling a bit jet lagged and Terresa sent me home with leftovers and herbal tea at the end of the class- so nice! It was a pleasant way to spend a day in Paris.

We had dinner one night at the vegan restaurant Le Potager du Marais. It is a small place, but was not at all crowded when we got there around 7pm. They have an impressive menu with some vegan versions of french food and some other interesting creations. We ordered the soup of the day which was Green Pea and vegetable, a French Onion soup, and then a Quinoa Burger with gratin potatoes and a dish called "Pink Lentil Balls". We enjoyed the soups a lot - the portions were way bigger than we expected. The main dishes were good too, but just not quite to our taste. I think from reading some reviews online that the dishes here are a little hit or miss. We did split the chocolate mousse for dessert and this was excellent. I would say it's a good vegan option in Paris but maybe not a "must go".

Here are some other various foodie photos I took while in Paris. The top left is a veggie and hummus sandwich, tabbouleh salad, and juice that I grabbed for lunch from Le Bio d' Adam et Eve, near the Les Halles station. Let me tell you, when we got to this place I was SO happy because they actually had vegan labels on their selections! The food was very tasty too, and is all organic. Wonderful place!
The top right is another meal we had from Veggie, a place we found on the fly while realizing we were hungry after visiting the Musee d'Orsay. It's a small shop and deli type restaurant and while they didn't have menus the waiter told us 3 specials for lunch that day and assured me of which was vegan. We weren't really sure what we were getting but ended up with a stir fry and vegetable type dish with salad, and a tasty baked vegetable dish that had potatoes, carrot and squash and was served with rice. Definitely a solid stop if you're near the area.
Bottom left - the fresh french bread that we enjoyed almost every day. There are a lot of choices in the bread shops (boulangeries) but I felt pretty safe with the Pain Traditional.
Bottom right - selection of tofu and other mock meats inside a natural grocery store called Naturalia.

paris6_veganflingPictured above is the fabulous lunch we had at Les Cinq Saveurs d'Anada which is located near the Pantheon. They have mostly vegan options, but do serve some fish and other things. If I remember right the menu was marked with what was vegan. This place is amazing! I tried fresh carrot apple juice and a salad plate, and my husband got a tofu plate with rice, quinoa, and salad. Everything was really delicious, especially the tofu. It was so nice to have a fresh and healthy meal. This place would be on my "must go" list for sure!
paris5_veganfling
The last recommendation on my list is the Gentle Gourmet Cafe. This is a fairly new vegan restaurant in Paris (It used to be a B+B) and we had a great dinner here on our last night. Pictured above is a pumpkin leek soup (with a hot chocolate in the background), a Mediterranean salad with chickpeas, a potato gratin type of dish with salad, and the most amazing dessert crepe of all time. We seriously almost licked that plate clean. I got my wish of trying a crepe in France, and it was even filled with soy milk ice cream! Yum. Definitely make a stop here!

Some General Tips
1. You can't really just pop in to any place and expect to find something vegan-friendly on the menu or be able to modify something like is common in the US. Most places we passed just walking around I would have had a hard time finding something to eat. I did a lot of research ahead of time on Happy Cow and other sites and made a list of restaurants that had vegan options. My husband got a map app for his phone and we put in all the sites we wanted to see as well as my list of restaurants. That way if we were out sight seeing and wanted to find food nearby, we could just look it up and see what was close. This was seriously a life saver!

2. We rented a small studio apartment through Flipkey, and this turned out to be a great advantage too. In addition to feeling like you are living more like a native, we had a small kitchen and were able to eat some easy meals at home. We would get fresh bread and bring it home for a snack almost every day. I stocked up on snacks like trail mix and fruit, and would bring something along when sight seeing.

3. Neither of us speak any French, and I was a little worried about getting by. Almost everywhere we went like restaurants and shops we had zero problem. We asked people nicely if they spoke English and most either said "of course" or that they would try their best. I think being friendly and not expecting things goes a long way. Most of the menus in restaurants had English translations too!

I hope that this post will help anyone planning a Paris trip, and maybe inspire a few people to think about going! I think traveling and experiencing new places is worth it, and I'm happy that with careful planning it's easy to find some great vegan food there as well.

Thanks for stopping by!

Friday Flashback - Philadelphia

I just got back from my trip to Philadelphia! I got to visit with 2 of my best friends and it was quite the adventure since we were not sure if we would be affected by Hurricane Sandy or not. We ended up still being able to go out and explore quite a bit before the weather turned bad, and we were lucky and didn't loose power. We tried out a few of the places on my list, and found some other great places as well!
Miss Rachel's Pantry offers catering and lunch delivery, and is open for brunch on the weekends. They also do a farmhouse dinner on Saturdays with a fixed menu for up to 12 people. We were able to go for brunch on Saturday, and everything we tried was great! I'm lucky my friends like to share food! We tried the wheatball hoagie, butternut squash soup, and maple-walnut french toast casserole. Everything was delicious but I think the french toast was my favorite. We also tried some of the coconut bacon (awesome) and grabbed a gooey brownie for the road! Definitely worth a stop in if you are near by!
On Tuesday after the storm had passed over and everyone was venturing out again, we walked to Rittenhouse and tried out Hip City Veg for lunch. If I lived there, I would be going to this place ALL the time! It is a small place with a focus on fast-food inspired fresh vegan food, and everything we tried was awesome. Pictured above is the Crispy Hipcity Ranch sandwich and the Jerk Caesar Salad. We also split some sweet potato fries which are great. I highly recommend trying this place out! It's perfect for a quick lunch while out sight seeing or wandering around.
Here are a few more random photos and food stops on my trip.
1. Vegan Brunch Wrap from Sabrina's Cafe with grilled seitan and mushrooms.
2. Black Bean Burger from Local 44 in West Philly. Fun place!
3. Risotto with Squash - homemade when we were camping out inside.
4. The Thinker - in front of the Rodin Museum.
5. Delicious sushi from Dasiwa in Fairmount.
Alright people. We now have to talk about Vedge. This restaurant was the #1 stop on my list, and one of my friends had been there for happy hour and was so excited to take me there. First of all, the inside decor is cozy and classy, which was perfect for the rainy night we went. Second of all, it's similar to tapas with the food coming in small plates sizes, which is great for sharing. Most importantly - every single thing we tried was AMAZING. I know there are already tons of rave reviews about Vedge, but I can't help but add mine. Pictured above is the autumn squash pierogies, fresh hearts of palm in a garbanzo crepe, grilled seitan with creamy parsnips and english peas, smoked eggplant & cauliflower, crispy brussels sprouts and spicy cauliflower from their "dirt list" (appetizers) and the dessert is the cheesecake with figs and pistachios. I can't even tell you which was my favorite because I couldn't decide. I kept declaring each new dish was the best yet. I think most of us at the table all agreed the pierogies were extra delicious. The cheesecake was probably the best I've ever tried too. It's a little pricey so it would be a great spot for special occasions, but if you are just in Philly for a trip, do not miss Vedge! Trust me!

Overall it was a great trip! I love visiting Philly and found some new favorite restaurants this time around too. Have you been to any of these places? Any other Philly faves I should try next time?

Thanks for stopping by!

Travel: Denver

As a part of Vegan MoFo I decided It would be fun to dedicate my Monday posts to travel. I love to try out new restaurants and local cuisine whenever I travel to new places, and I also love to plan!

I decided to do a travel post by "visiting" my own home of Denver, Colorado. Denver is actually a very vegan friendly city! I don't live near downtown, so I haven't had a chance to check out of all these places yet. I think it's harder to find the time to go out and explore your own area sometimes because you have all your other usual commitments. I will definitely find time for each of these soon!

City O City
A casual but hip place that serves vegetarian and vegan foods. I highly recommend the City O burger or the Savory Waffle! Everything from their bakery is vegan too.

Udi's Supper Club
The Arvada location of Udi's Cafe has a once a month vegan supper club. It's a set 4 course menu that changes every month. I've been a few times and it's always fantastic!
My posts: here and here.

Sweet Action Ice Cream
A small but super popular ice cream place in the South Broadway neighborhood. They always offer at least 2 vegan ice cream flavors AND have vegan ice cream cookie sandwiches! Awesome.

NOOCH | Vegan Market
Brand new to Denver, Nooch is a small vegan grocery and retail store. They also have to-go foods like wraps, salads, and bakery items. I finally made it downtown to check this place out and it's awesome! I picked up a few things while I was there: local organic ketchup, ranch dressing, homemade bread, rice crackers, chocolate sprinkles and vegan lip balm. If you are in the area, you must check this place out!

Vegan Van
That's right - Denver has a vegan food truck! I can't believe I haven't been able to visit yet!
You can find the van through their website, and currently they at Nooch on Wednesdays and at Sweet Action on Friday nights.

Watercourse Foods
Maybe the most well known vegetarian restaurant in Denver, Watercourse also has a full bakery and always seems to be busy. I hear that their Seitan Buffalo Wings are the best ever. Also, Vegan Milkshakes!

Linger
A fairly new upscale Denver restaurant that has been getting rave reviews. They offer several vegan options, including pad thai, masala dosa, tamales, and salted butterscotch pudding for dessert. I also hear the bar is covered in lite brites, so clearly I need to go here very soon.

Travel: Paris

As a part of Vegan MoFo I decided It would be fun to dedicate my Monday posts to travel. I love to try out new restaurants and local cuisine whenever I travel to new places, and I also love to plan!

My husband and I are traveling to Paris this November! We'll be sight seeing and also celebrating our one year anniversary. Of course I'm very excited, but I'm also a little bit nervous about what I can find to eat there. After doing a little digging around it seems that Paris does have some vegan options, so not all hope is lost! Here are some places that I'll be looking to try when we get there.

Gentle Gourmet Café
100% vegan menu of French and Mediterranean food. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Le Potager Du Marais
Traditional French menu done vegetarian with many vegan options for meals and desserts.
Oh She Glows has a nice write up.

Saveurs Végét'Halles
Casual vegetarian cafe with many vegan options.

Vegan Folie's
All vegan bakery featuring cupcakes, cookies and other treats.

Maoz Vegetarian
A grab and go place offering falafel and vegetables. 2 Paris locations.

Un Monde Vegan
Vegan market with convenience food products and other items.

Some more great resources:
Vegan Paris

Happy Cow

I really need to start working on learning a bit of French!
Has anyone traveled to Paris and have any recommendations of places to eat or other tips on dining there? It seems like most agree that it's a little difficult. I would love to hear your experiences in the comments!

Travel: Maui

As a part of Vegan MoFo I decided It would be fun to dedicate my Monday posts to travel. I love to try out new restaurants and local cuisine whenever I travel to new places, and I also love to plan!

Next up on my travel series is Maui, Hawaii! This beautiful island holds a special place in my heart. It's where my husband and I got married almost a year ago. We absolutely loved it there, and can't wait to go back. We actually stayed in the town of Paia, which I now know is the most vegan friendly area on the island. I missed a few of the best places though, so I can't wait to try the amazing variety of dining options the next time we return!

Fresh Mint
Vegetarian Vietnamese food in Paia on the north shore. I can't believe I missed out on this place when I was here - it sounds great. Just another reason I need to go back...

Joy's Place
Located in Kihei, this vegan-friendly restaurant has soups, salads, sandwiches and smoothies, as well as some raw food selections.

Choice Health Bar

On the west side. Kristy at Keepin' It Kind raved so much about their acai bowls, that I don't think I could pass up trying one!

Ono Gelato

Locations all over the island and offers lots of vegan gelato choices. We did go to the Paia location when we were here, and it is amazing!

Flatbread Company
Flatbread is a cool, laid-back restaurant in Paia. They offer a vegan pizza and some really amazing salads. We went here twice on our trip because it was so good.

Mana Foods
A great grocery store market in Paia. They have vegan baked goods and to-go items. Perfect place to stop if you are on your way to drive the Road to Hana.

At the Haleakala National Park Summit

Anyone else have tips for vegan dining in Maui, or in other parts of Hawaii?
Please share in the comments!

Travel: Philadelphia

As a part of Vegan MoFo I decided It would be fun to dedicate my Monday posts to travel. I love to try out new restaurants and local cuisine whenever I travel to new places, and I also love to plan!

First on my list is Philadelphia, PA. I love going to visit Philly so much! Mainly this is because two of my best friends happen to live there. I've visited a few times over the last couple years, and am headed back at the end of this month. Here are some places that are on my list to check out for some vegan eats.

Elfreth's Alley - the nations' oldest residential street

Vedge
This is a fairly new resturant that has been getting some amazing reviews. Can't wait to try out the autumn harvest pierogies or the wood grilled sweet potato pate.

Blackbird Pizzeria
Vegan pizza by the slice? Sign me up! Yukon potato with rosemary and sea salt sound delicious.

Hip City Veg
Fast food style with sandwiches, salads, and some fun drinks. You can get a Philly "Steak" sandwich!

Grindcore House
Coffee house with non-dairy milk for your drinks, plus vegan food and sweets.

Sweet Freedom Bakery
All vegan bakery! They have donuts, cookies, cakes and cupcakes. I am dreaming of Double Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies.

One of the elaborate mosaics in Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

If anyone has any Philly restaurant suggestions, please share them in the comments!

Friday Flashback: Keystone

Last weekend, we took a little trip to Keystone, CO. It's a ski town, but in the summer it's uncrowded and offers some beautiful mountain views. We had a great time relaxing and escaping some of the super hot weather in Denver this summer!

I found a great little cafe and coffee shop called Inxpot that had several vegan options on their menu! I went with the vegan chicken salad sandwich which was great. If we had stayed longer, I would have definetly returned to this place!

For dinner we found a pizza place near our hotel that was pretty good. I was able to create my own veggie pizza without any cheese, so I was happy.

I think this will be our last little vacation for the summer. I have some big plans for the rest of the year to look forward to though - Philadelphia and PARIS! I can't wait.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Flashback: Minneapolis Edition

This week I thought I'd talk about my trip to Minneapolis! I actually found some great places to eat there.

The first place we tried was Galactic Pizza. They are very vegan friendly and even had a special note in their (awesome 3D) menu! I had a tasty vegetable pizza with vegan mozzerella. I also couldn't pass up trying their vegan garlic bread.

The next day we went to French Meadow Bakery & Cafe. This place is really awesome! I wish we had one in Denver. They have a huge menu with several vegan options. I tried some black bean chili and a great salad with tofu. I also had some lemonade (sweetened with maple syrup) and grabbed a peanut butter carob chip cookie for the plane. :)

I stopped at a few other places for a quick bite over the course of the weekend. The falafel plate was from Mim's (in Saint Paul) and this delicious vegetable and hummus sandwich was from Tao's Natural Foods.

Don't forget to check out the Virtual Vegan Potluck tomorrow! I'll be contributing a side dish, and you can jump through the whole potluck to see tons of great recipe ideas from all the blogs that are participating. You can start at the beginning of the potluck at Vegan Blogs Unite.

I'll meet you back here tomorrow!
