First on my list is Philadelphia, PA. I love going to visit Philly so much! Mainly this is because two of my best friends happen to live there. I've visited a few times over the last couple years, and am headed back at the end of this month. Here are some places that are on my list to check out for some vegan eats.

Vedge
This is a fairly new resturant that has been getting some amazing reviews. Can't wait to try out the autumn harvest pierogies or the wood grilled sweet potato pate.
Blackbird Pizzeria
Vegan pizza by the slice? Sign me up! Yukon potato with rosemary and sea salt sound delicious.
Hip City Veg
Fast food style with sandwiches, salads, and some fun drinks. You can get a Philly "Steak" sandwich!
Grindcore House
Coffee house with non-dairy milk for your drinks, plus vegan food and sweets.
Sweet Freedom Bakery
All vegan bakery! They have donuts, cookies, cakes and cupcakes. I am dreaming of Double Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies.

ReplyDeletei haven't been to vedge yet, but am interested in trying it. although, the whole small plate/big plate scares me. i have a big appetite. i've sat in blackbird, but couldn't eat anything because they have no gf options.
i've been eager to try out a new raw cafe that just opened up called the jarbar. everything looks delish!

DeleteThat is a bummer that Blackbird does not have gf options. I'm surprised by that actually. The good news is that Sweet Freedom Bakery is all gluten free! :) I'm going to check our Jarbar too, thanks for the suggestion!
Another Philly person, here! I technically live in NJ now, right across the river, but still work in Philly and lived there for 8 years prior to my jump over to NJ!
ReplyDeleteOK, so Vedge, the owner/chefs are the same as from Horizons, don't know if you guys went there or not. I've heard good things about Vedge, but the ordering, little plates, etc. is annoying according to my good friend who has gone several times. Also, don't get the seitan (my friend said it was dry! Imagine that!)But the desserts were all amazing (again, according to her).
Sweet Freedom Bakery, sorry, I do not recommend it at all, and I REALLY wanted to love it! :-( I was shocked at how bad it was, actually. The treats, particularly the cupcakes were dry, flavorless, chalky. Even the icings weren't good! But I only went there once (and had a notably bad experience) so I don't plan to try it again, but keep us posted if you get there!
BUT, conveniently, Sweet Freedom is RIGHT near Govinda's, around the corner, actually, and it is GREAT for Vegan Chicken Cheese Steaks. The ambiance isn't that great, though, it's just a sandwich shop, really. You MUST get the Vegan "Chicken" Cheese Steak with their HOUSE MADE VEGAN CHEESE, it's great. I get it on a wrap (spinach, usually). Some of their desserts look amazing (all house made and vegan, I believe).
Also, try Singapore, a vegan, Kosher place in Chinatown. EVERYTHING on the menu is vegan, it's a blast. Everything I've tried has been good, but they have the BEST seitan "wings" ever, house made, and fantastic. However, a lot of their stuff is deep fried, and the menu doesn't say. Just ask. Oh, hey! ReplyDeleteVedge is well worth navagating the big/small plates. Trust me, it's not that hard. :) Think tapas. Bring someone to share with and taste as many things as you can. Everything I had was excellent!
